Christmas

CHRISTMAS IN GREAT BRITAIN

In Britain, Christmas Day is normally spent at home, with the family, and it is regarded as a celebration of the family.

Preparations start with the sending of Christmas cards and installation of a decorated Christmas tree in an important place in the home. The tradition of the Christmas tree was introduced in 1840 by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who was born in Germany.

Some houses are decorated with evergreens (plants which don't lose their leaves in winter); a wreath of holly on the front door and garlands of holly, ivy and fir indoors.

The excitement begins for children on Christmas Eve, when they hang up their stockings around the fireplace or at the foot of the bed, so that Father Christmas can fill them with presents.

Bunches of mistletoe are often hung above doorways - any couple passing underneath must exchange kisses!

Traditional food is prepared: sweet mince pies,

a rich Christmas cake and the Christmas pudding. Everyone has their own favourite recipe, but they’re all full of spices, nuts, dried fruit and brandy.

People buy and wrap presents and place them under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.

Christmas is a secular and a religious holiday, and many families like to go to the midnight mass at church on Christmas Eve, or celebrate Christmas in church on Christmas morning.

Practically everyone sits down to a Christmas dinner in the early afternoon of Christmas Day, traditionally roast turkey,

but some families prefer goose or roast beef. The turkey is followed by the Christmas pudding, brought to the table flaming hot. Brandy is poured over the pudding, then lit.

The day ends with everyone relaxing, watching television or playing guessing-games like charades.

The English Father Christmas or Santa Claus is first recorded in his traditional red and white clothes in an image of 1653, but the story of Santa arriving in his reindeer-drawn sleigh and descending down the chimney to fill children’s stockings with presents derives from the USA.

Jingle Bells

video

Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
We got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh yeah

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

Believe it or not, Jingle Bells, one of the most famous American Christmas songs, was originally written for Thanksgiving! The author and composer of Jingle Bells was a minister called James Pierpoint who composed the song in 1857 for children celebrating his Boston Sunday School Thanksgiving. The song was so popular that it was repeated at Christmas, and indeed Jingle Bells has been reprised ever since. The essence of a traditional Christmas is captured in the lyrics of Jingle Bells and the sound effects using the bells have become synonymous with the arrival of Father Christmas or Santa Claus to the delight of children of all ages!

Rockin' around the Christmas Tree

video

Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree
At the Christmas Party Hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see
Every couple tries to stop

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling

You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, "Let's be jolly,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly"

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancin' merrily
In the new old-fashioned way

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling

You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, "Let's be jolly,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly"

Shake Up Christmas

video

Shake Up Christmas

Ho-ho-ho
Shake up the happiness
Wake up the happiness
Shake up the happiness
It's Christmas time

There's a story that I was told
And I wanna tell the world before I get too old
And don't remember it so let's December it
And reassemble it, oh yeah

Once upon a time in a town like this
A little girl made a great big wish
To fill the world full of happiness
And be on Santa's magic list

Shake it up
Shake up the happiness
Wake it up
Wake up the happiness
Come on y'all
It's Christmas time

Shake it up
Shake up the happiness
Wake it up
Wake up the happiness
Come on y'all
It's Christmas time

Ho-ho-ho
Ho-ho-ho
 It's Christmas time

At the same time miles away
A little boy made a wish that day
That the world would be OK
And Santa Claus would hear him say:
I got dreams and I got love
I got my feet on the ground
And family above
Can you send some happiness
With my best to the rest of the people
Of the East and the West and
Maybe every once in a while you
Give my Grandma a reason to smile
It is the season of smile
It's cold but we'll be freezing in style
Let me meet a girl one day
That wants to spread some love this way
We can let our souls run free and
She can open some happiness with me

Shake it up…

I know you're out there
I hear your reindeer
I see the snow where
Your boots have been
I'm gonna show them
So they will know then
Their love will grow
When they believe again.

Shake it up…

Ho-ho-ho
Ho-ho-ho
It's Christmas time
Ho-ho-ho
Ho-ho-ho

Shake it up…

Hold my hand

video

HOLD MY HAND
This life don't last forever  (hold my hand)
So tell me what we're waiting for  (hold my hand)
We're better off being together  (hold my hand)
Than being miserable alone (hold my hand)

Cause I've been there before
And you've been there before
But together we can be alright.
Cause when it gets dark and when it gets cold
We hold each other till we see the sunlight

So if you just hold my hand
Baby I promise that I'll do  all I can
Things will get better if you just hold my hand
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my, hold my,  hold my hand.
Hold my hand.

The nights are getting darker  (hold my hand)
And there's no peace inside  (hold my hand)
So why make our lives harder  (hold my hand)
By fighting love, tonight. (sooooo)

Cause I've been there before
And you've been there before
But together we can be alright
Cause when it gets dark and when it gets cold
We hold each other till we see the sunlight

So if you just hold my hand
Baby I promise that I'll do
All I can  (If you just, If you just)
Things will get better if you just hold my hand
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my,  hold my,  hold my hand.
Hold my hand .

I can tell that you're tired of being lonely
Take my hand, don't let go, baby hold me
Come to me,  let me be your one and only
So I can make it alright, til' the morning

I can tell that you're tired of being lonely
Take my hand, don't let go, baby hold me
Come to me, let me be your one and only
So I can make it alright, til' the morning

Hold my hand
Baby I promise  that I'll do all I can
Things will get better if you just hold my hand
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my,  hold my,  hold my hand.

Hold my hand (yeahh) (x3)
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my,  hold my,  hold my hand.

Hold my hand

California

CALIFORNIA

California is a state located on the West Coast of the United States.

Nicknamed "The Golden State," it is the most populous state of the USA.

It has  got eight of the nation's 50 most populous cities. Its five largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, and Fresno.

California's capital is Sacramento.

California's geography varies from the Pacific Coast to the west, to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the east, to the Mojave Desert areas in the southeast and to the RedwoodDouglas forest of the northwest.

The center of the state is dominated by the Central Valley, a big agricultural area.

California contains both the highest (Mount Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in the United States.

Earthquakes are common, because of California's position on the Pacific Ring of Fire. About 37 thousand earthquakes are recorded each year.

California was first colonized by the Spanish Empire. After the beginning of the Mexican-American War in 1846, a group of American settlers declared an independent California Republic. American victory in the war led to a treaty, in which Mexico ceded Alta California to the United States. Western areas of Alta California became the state of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850.

The California Gold Rush beginning in 1848 led to a big social and demographic change, with a lot of immigrants from the U.S. and abroad and an economic boom.

Los Angeles became the center of the American entertainment industry and tourism.

At the end of the 20th century, technology and information sectors developed in the Silicon Valley.

In addition to California's prosperous agricultural industry, other important contributors to its economy include aerospace, education, and manufacturing

If California were a country, it would be the eighth-largest economy in the world and the 35th most populous nation.
